The Eversource Energy Center (EEC) is a UConn-Eversource partnership that brings together researchers across disciplines to develop science-based solutions for a more reliable, resilient, and secure electric grid. Through research and educational programs, the Center advances storm outage forecasting, forest and vegetation management, grid modernization, and technologies that strengthen electric system operations and resilience.

Research Facilities & Capabilities

High Performance Computing

The Center's high-performance computing infrastructure supports daily weather, outage, and flood forecasting, as well as large-scale predictive modeling. These capabilities enable researchers and partners to develop, test, and deploy data-intensive models for electric grid resilience and extreme-weather preparedness.

The computing center houses:
• 120+ nodes
• 2500+ cores
• 10 TB of RAM
• 800 TB of storage

Tree Biomechanics Laboratory

The Tree Biomechanics Lab studies how trees respond to wind and extreme weather to improve understanding of tree stability and storm-related risks to electric infrastructure. Biaxial clinometers and anemometers monitor tree movement at 41 sites across Connecticut, providing field data to support more resilient forest and utility management.

Power Grid Simulation Test Bed

The test bed is used to test and validate power grid simulations, including the integration of distributed energy resources, grid modernization methods, and cybersecurity techniques.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Laboratory

The UAS Lab is equipped with LiDAR, infrared, thermal imaging, and radar technologies for mapping and intrusion detection. Its flight platforms include both fixed-wing and heavy-lift aircraft.
